Deutsche Welle opens applications for 2028–2029 journalism traineeship

APPLICATIONS are open for the Deutsche Welle (DW) Journalism Traineeship 2028, an 18-month paid training programme in Germany for aspiring journalists and media professionals seeking to develop their skills in multimedia journalism.

The programme begins on January 3, 2028, and will run until June 2029. Trainees will receive practical training and newsroom experience at DW’s broadcasting centres in Bonn and Berlin, with opportunities to learn about television, radio, online journalism and digital storytelling.

Deutsche Welle is Germany’s international broadcaster, providing news and other media content to audiences around the world. Its journalism traineeship combines practical newsroom experience with seminars and professional training.

Participants will develop skills in multimedia reporting, content production and emerging areas of journalism, including data journalism, digital storytelling and virtual reality.

The programme also includes placements in DW editorial departments and may provide opportunities to work with its international bureaus.

The programme welcomes applicants from different nationalities and professional backgrounds who meet DW’s requirements.

Applicants should have completed a university degree, college degree or apprenticeship before the traineeship begins, have initial journalism or media-related experience, demonstrate creativity, curiosity and an interest in journalism, possess social media expertise and the ability to work effectively in a team under deadlines, and meet the programme’s language requirements.

DW specifies three language pathways: native speakers of one of its programme languages with excellent English and good German; native English speakers with good German; or native German speakers with excellent English.

Applicants should consult the official announcement for the precise language expectations applicable to their background.

Application deadline is November 17, 2026, at 12 noon German time. Interested applicants can apply here.
