Improving the Visibility of fact-checking content in Nigeria
The spread of fake news and misinformation has become a significant problem in Nigeria, particularly on social media platforms. This has increased political tension and led to social unrest, and even violence, as was evident in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections. The FactCheckHub was set up amid the infodemic that came with COVID-19 in 2020 and has become one of Nigeria’s most credible verification platforms working to increase its capacity, visibility, and impact in Nigeria. As many virtual information sources with doubtful reliability keep surfacing, the spread of fake news, which threatens quality journalism and media literacy, is on the increase in Nigeria. The problem is not unique to online environments; it is also present in the conventional media, despite the prevalent fact-checking networks. This project will allow wider dissemination of verified content in Nigeria using a multilingual mechanism, multimedia content creation, and social media amplification approach. The outcome of this project will improve the safety, protection, and security of the FactCheckHub website whilst improving audience interaction and visibility.
