Audu Maikori Re-arrested, May Face Prosecution For ‘Fake News’

Audu Maikori, the lawyer and entrepreneur who had posted false stories about the Southern Kaduna crisis, has reportedly been rearrested by the police and taken to Kaduna State.

The unconfirmed report has it that the Chocolate City owner was rearrested on Friday.

Maikori was first arrested in Lagos on February 17 and later released for claiming via the social media that five students of the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan-Waya, were killed in an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The story was later found to be false as the institution issued a disclaimer saying that no such attack occurred.

Maikori subsequently retracted his claims and offered an apology, saying that he was misled by his driver.

But Governor Nasir el-Rufai has insisted that Maikori must be prosecuted as a deterrent to others who are wont to spreading unverified stories on the social media.
