Gombe, capital of Gombe State in North east Nigeria witnessed an attack by a suicide bomber on a day when President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign rally berthed in the city.
A female suicide bomber was said to have detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, at the Water Board area in the city shortly after the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, rally held at the the Pantami International Stadium
The Gombe State Police Command public relations officer, Fwaje Atajiri confirmed the incident to newsmen but dispelled reports that the President was the target of the attack.
He pointed out that the area where the bomb went off was quite far from the venue of the presidential campaign rally, adding that two persons, including the female suicide bomber dies in the incident.
“Two people lost their lives, the female suicide bomber and one other woman. 18 others that sustained injuries are being treated at the Gombe specialist’s hospital,” Atajiri told reporters.
