THE Borno State government has received over N4.4 billion to support the victims affected by the recent flood in the state capital, Maiduguri, and its environs.
The state’s governor, Babagana Zulum, disclosed this on Monday, September 23, during the inauguration of a 35-member Relief Disbursement Committee in Maiduguri.
Zulum said the money had been paid into the designated state’s relief account.
“So far, we acknowledged a pledge of N13,195,500,000; however, as of yesterday (Sunday), we received a total amount of N4,441,494,902.81. All allocations to this account shall be made public in due course,” he said.
The governor further urged the committee members to ensure that the disbursement process is done with integrity.
“We must be accountable for every resource entrusted to us. We must ensure that every naira allocated for relief is used effectively and reaches those who are suffering,” he added.
He also ordered that payment for the committee member should be made by the government and not from the relief funds, adding that all the donations be sent to the flood victims.
Meanwhile, the governor said his administration would fix other public infrastructures including hospitals, roads, and bridges.
The ICIR reports that in the early hours of September 10, flood-ravaged parts of Borno state and inundated several communities in Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas.
A report by The ICIR explained that the United Nations raised alarm over the devastating flooding impact in the state, which it said has exacerbated an already critical food and nutrition crisis in the state’s internally displaced person camps.
It also noted the possible risk of a cholera outbreak, as it stressed that access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities was severely disrupted by the floodwaters.
Since the flood, the state has been visited by several organisations to assess the severity of the disaster while donations are still ongoing.
