Collapsed building kills one, injures many in Abuja

By: Rebecca Akinremi

A three-storey building under construction has collapsed, killing one person and injuring many others at the Utako area of Abuja on Friday.

The building, said to be a shopping complex, collapsed while workers were still working inside it.

Reports say works resumed at the building just recently after it had been abandoned for the past 15 years.

Many people, including workers at the site, hawkers and passers-by, some of them children, were still trapped in the building as at the time of this report.

Officials of the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were at the site, working to rescue those who were still trapped in the building.

So far, some of the trapped persons have been rescued, including the site engineer who was reported to have serious injuries on his legs.

Attempts by The ICIR to speak to Mukhtar Usman, head of the Federal Capital Territory Development Control, proved abortive as he neither picked his calls nor returned text messages sent to him.
