The Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali, a retired Colonel, has warned his men that he will ensure that any personnel involved in corrupt acts gets the maximum jail term of 10 years.
Ali gave the warning on Tuesday at a meeting with officers of Sokoto/Zamfara/ Kebbi Area Command in Sokoto.
“The minimum jail term for corrupt officers is five years, but I will make sure that any officer found to be corrupt gets the maximum jail term of 10 years,” Ali said, adding that the warning was intended to deter any officer who is in the Customs to “to make money and not to earn money.”
He said while there are good and incorruptible officers in the service, a few bad eggs are giving it a bad name. He also advised the officers to ensure that their conducts reflect the federal government’s change mantra and warned against indiscipline.
”You should all do this to minimize the chances of getting into trouble, except those who are criminally minded,” Ali noted and urged them work hard to ensure that all revenue leakages are blocked so that part of the generated revenue can go into providing accommodation for the service personnel.
The Customs chief also promised that the era of favouritism in promotions, transfers and postings is over and that all these would now be based on merit.
