By Musdafa Ilo, Maiduguri

As part of celebrations to mark democracy day, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has pardoned 15 prisoners in Maiduguri and Biu prisons.

Represented by the state’s commissioner for justice and attorney general, Kaka Shehu Lawan, the governor said the freed prisoners were selected from a list of 37 applications received, with 10 of them coming from Maiduguri Prison while the others are from Biu Prison.

“We received 37 applications and after thorough scrutiny, 15 inmates were qualified for pardon,” Shettima said, as he made donation of food items to the prisons and urged the pardoned convicts to be good ambassadors and not to engage in activities that would take them back to prison.

Each of the released prisoners was given an undisclosed amounts of money while female inmates were given N50, 000 each.

Borno State deputy comptroller of prisons, Lumsam Kaye, commended the governor for his attention towards prisons in the state, particularly with regards to provision of infrastructure.
