Edo 2024: Elderly people, PWDs, prioritised during voting

AS voting progresses in Edo state, the elderly, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and party agents are given priority to do accreditation and cast their votes.

The ICIR observed at Ward 2, Units 3, 4 and 5 in Obiedu Primary School and Ward 2, Units 7 and 8, Ivue Primary School, Uromi Local Government Area how these groups of people were prioritised during the accreditation process.

This is in tandem with the 2022 Electoral Act, which considers the electoral rights of people living with disability and aims to remove the barriers that restrict the full participation of these groups of voters and candidates in the electoral process.

The ICIR reported that accreditation and voting have commenced across the state.

Early morning downpours delayed the exercise in Edo Central Senatorial District.

The ICIR also reported that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) arrested some political thugs on Friday night to curb electoral violence ahead of the poll.

On Friday, September 20, President Bola Tinubu called on all stakeholders in the election to conduct themselves peacefully and respect the democratic process.

The three major candidates in the election include a senator representing Edo Central, Monday Okpebholo, who is running on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), prominent lawyer and businessman, Asue Ighodalo, contesting on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, of the Labour Party (LP).
