Edo Lawmaker Dies At UBTH Of An Undisclosed Ailment

From Jefferson Ibiwale, Benin ‎

A member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing Etsako East constituency 1, Peter Usman Aliu, has reportedly died early Monday morning of an undisclosed ailment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, where he had been hospitalized.

Aliu’s widow, children and family members were seen at his residence at the Legislators’ Quarters, mourning his demise.

Some members of the Assembly, including the Majority Leader, Philip Shaibu, Johnson Oguma, and the state commissioner for Environment and Public Utility, Clem Agba, were at his residence to condole with his wife.

Before his death, the lawmaker had collected the nomination form of his All Progressive Party, APC, as an expression of his interest to vie for his seat again in next year’s general election.

Aliu was born in Igbiode-Agenebode in Etsako East local government area of Edo State and attended the St. Peter’s Grammer School Agbenebode for his secondary education. He subsequently proceeded to the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, for his tertiary education and, thereafter, to England in 1976 as a federal scholar to study for his Accountancy professional examination.

The lawmaker also bagged a degree in Law and was called to the Bar in 2000.

He was until his death, serving as a second term member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing Etsako East Constituency and was the chairman, House Committee on Appropriation and Project Monitoring.
