The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has released popular blogger, Abubakar Sidiq, otherwise known as Abusidiq.
He was arrested on Monday after he published an article alleging that the EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu was bullying his staff.
The EFCC released a statement saying Abusidiq was arrested for violating some sections of the cybercrime act.
Sidiq was released on Tuesday following a social media campaign mounted by fellow bloggers and the conventional press.
The hash tag #FreeAbusidiq trended on the social network the whole of Monday and Tuesday.
His arrest had sparked angry reactions from Nigerians most of whom saw the action as a move to gag the free press.
Sidiq is a strong supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari, and a founding member of the youth wing of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a statement posted on its Facebook account, the APC youth wing said “The EFCC was formed to investigate financial crimes and had overstepped its jurisdiction by detaining Sidiq.”
Even the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, also criticized the EFCC’s actions
Sidiq is the third blogger to be arrested in Nigeria since the Cyber Crime Act came into force in 2015.
