THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asked Nigerians to be careful about the circulation of counterfeit US dollars in Nigeria as the general elections are around the corner.
This alarm raised by the EFCC followed an intelligence it had received and investigated.
Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the EFCC revealed this finding in a statement signed by him for the Commission.
As we approach the 2019 general elections all security outfits are expected to be on their toes, he said, adding that the security agents needed to alert the public about the spread of fake dollars in the circulation
From the studies carried out on the fake dollar notes, the EFCC found out the notes were only subtly different from original dollar notes.
“The intelligence indicates that the dollar notes have features of genuineness, but forensic analysis by the commission reveals otherwise,” the statement read.
The EFCC warned bureaux de change operators especially to be extremely careful with their transactions from now until the elections are over.
Similarly, another report says President Muhammadu Buhari has notified Nigerians of the alleged inflow of unusually very large amount of foreign currency to the country which he said was meant to influence the outcome of the elections on Saturday.
