GIJN offers webinar on how to investigate the FIFA World Cup

IN the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup, the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) is offering a webinar on the theme: ‘Investigating the World Cup’.

The programme aims to bring together experts in digging into soccer’s questionable practices.

Panelists are Brazilian journalist Jamil Chade, British journalist Dan Conn and Australian writer Bonita Mersiades.

Journalists and anyone interested in understanding how different forms of corruption occur in sports organisations can attend this webinar.

They will address how to conduct investigations on sports organisations, how to follow the money invested in soccer, and the main topics to watch for in the World Cup this year.

The webinar will be held on July 21, 2022.

The organiser says, “Football (soccer to Americans) is the world’s most popular sport and the World Cup one of its highlights, anticipated by millions, even billions around the globe”.

“The next World Cup takes place in November-December this year in Qatar, based on a decision made in 2010 by football’s governing body, FIFA (the International Federation of Football Associations). But FIFA has been wracked by scandal for years – from bribery and fraud to money laundering – while Qatar, an Arabian Gulf monarchy, has come under fire for human rights abuses”.

Registration is ongoing and interested persons can apply here.
