Ike Ekweremadu remains in custody as UK court grants wife bail

A LONDON court on Monday granted bail to the wife of a former deputy president of the Nigerian Senate, Beatrice Ekweremadu, charged with human trafficking and organ harvesting.

“The position is that I have granted bail to Beatrice subject to some fairly stringent conditions but I have refused bail to Ike,” the Common Serjeant of London, Richard Marks, said in his ruling on Monday evening.

Ekweremadu was arrested alongside her husband Ike on June 23 by the Metropolitan Police for allegedly trafficking a minor for the purpose of illegally harvest his organ.

The claim that the alleged victim was underage was subsequently debunked after passports, national ID and other documents confirmed his real age to be 21 years.

The Ekweremadus, however, were remanded in custody, despite several applications for bail.

The case against the Ekweremadus was postponed until August 4 for further hearing.
