Suspected members Boko Haram terrorist group on Tuesday allegedly raided the popular Ashaka Cement company in Ashaka, Gombe State, and carted away dynamites fully loaded in eight Toyota Hilux vehicles.
The development has heightened fears that with such a huge amount of dynamites in the hands of terrorist the group, the nation may witness more terrorist attacks, especially in view of the forthcoming elections.
A resident of Ashaka confirmed to our reporter that several gunmen believed to be Boko Haram members stormed the company production site and loaded eight Hilux vans belonging to the company with dynamite before they drove off.
Although they rounded up some people in the area, the insurgents did not kill anybody but only reportedly preached to them.
It was gathered that the terrorist group the next day also launched attacks in some border towns of Yobe and Gombe states which claimed scores lives.
A security source, who does not want to be mentioned told journalists on Wednesday that seven travellers along the Gombe-Potiskum highway were killed around Fika town.
He said that the killing of the seven came moments after a popular religious cleric and three of his students were killed in Nafada on the Gombe/Yobe border.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Gombe, Fwaje Atajir,i who confirmed the raid of the area said the unknown gunmen torched the police station, the local government and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, secretariat in Nafada town, but said their efforts to enter Bajoga the headquarters of Funakaye local government area was repelled by gallant security forces.
He however said he was not aware that dynamites were taken away by the insurgents, but added that the command has commenced investigation into the attack, promising to address the media on the situation.
Atajiri also confirmed that a cleric and three others were killed in Nafada while a police man was wounded during the raid and is been treated in an undisclosed hospital in the state.
“I can confirm to you of the attack on the two Local Government Areas of the state with casualty figure put at four while a police man was injured during the attack and is been treated. Our team of investigators have commenced inquiry on the attack and I can assure you the media will be adequately briefed as things unfold,” he told journalists.
Ashaka is located in Funakaye local government area of Gombe state and is about 120 kilometres to Gombe, the state capital while Nafada is 35 kilometres to Ashaka and boarders Yobe State to the North.
