Ghana’s Judicial Service has announced the suspension of seven of the 12 high court judges implicated in the scandal involving sex, bribery and other vices, which resulted from a three-hour documentary by investigative and undercover journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Anas’s two years investigation into one of Africa’s finest judiciaries saw judges and judicial workers exposed for demanding favours including sex and money from suspects in exchange for favourable trial outcomes.
The film, Ghana in the eyes of God: Epic of Injustice, continues to draw large audiences to cinemas and caused uproar in the country, prompting Chief Justice Georgina Wood to take a stand that has further increased the respect accorded to Ghana’s judiciary as a shining light in Africa.
“Their suspension follows the establishment of a prima facie case of stated misbehaviour against them by the Hon. Lady Chief Justice (Wood),” Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, Vice President of Ghana’s Judicial Service, said.
Twenty two junior judges had earlier been suspended following the embarrassing revelations while some of the judges have instituted a suit in court challenging their investigation based on the fact that the evidence relied upon had already been shown in public in contrast to the law that investigation of this nature should be done behind closed doors.
This latest suspension has, however, made the documentary even more popular among Ghanaians.
