NETFLIX selects contestants for a reality TV show inspired by Squid Game but the stakes will not be life or death, like the South Korean drama.
The platform announced on Wednesday, that its new 10-episode series titled “Squid Game: The Challenge” would give the “largest cast and lump cash prize in reality TV history”.
The show would recruit 456 people from around the world, they will play games and “the worst fate is going home empty-handed” – missing out on a $4.56m (£3.8m) prize.
“As [players] compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them,” it added.
Contestants must be 21 years and above, they must speak English, and be onset for filming for up to 4 weeks in early 2023.
The 456 contestants feature the same number of players in the fictional series, with its main character Seong Gi-hun also known as Player 456.
This South Korean fictional thriller is about debt-ridden people participating in a deadly competition for a huge cash prize.
In a statement on Monday, director, writer and executive producer of Squid Game Hwang Dong-hyuk said “It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”
Squid Game broke records as Netflix’s most-popular series – in the first 28 days of its launch 111 million users streamed the series.
Netflix confirmed that the famous series would be revived for a second season this month.
