Over 200 Boko Haram Members Surrender, As Troops Capture Banki

Suspected Boko Haram members

The Nigerian Army says more than 200 members of Boko Haram on Friday surrendered to troops in Banki, Borno State, following Thursday’s capture of the economically strategic town.

A joint effort between the military, made up of the Nigerian Army, Air Force and Cameroonian Army, led to the capture of Banki, a town that had served as an economic melting point for Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African countries before the advent of the Boko Haram insurgency.

It is also a major fishing town.

According to Nigerian Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, troops also destroyed seven Boko Haram camps and detonated seven improvised explosive devices in the town, bringing the total number of IEDs detonated between Banki and Darel Jamal to 13.

“During the encounter to recapture the town, several Boko Haram terrorists were killed and several others were captured alive between Banki junction and Ngorosoye,” Usman said.

“The recapture of this town apart restoring Nigeria’s territory law, would improve the economic activities in that area.”
