Less than two weeks after a crane crashed in Mecca, at least 717 people have been reportedly killed and at least 805 injured in Thursday’s massive stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, as worshipers commemorated Jamarat, the “stoning of the devil”.
The incident happened as people moved towards the Jamarat while others returned from the opposite direction, causing chaotic collision that led to people stepping on those on the ground to safety.
Over three million people observed this year’s hajj, with reports saying the total number of casualties remains unknown, as pilgrims thronged the Jamarat as early as 3am from Muzdalifa, where they spent the night.
While six Nigerians lost their lives in the crane crash that left more than 100 dead, it is not clear if any pilgrim from the country was involved in Thursday’s incident.
