Ngige casts vote, says `I voted according to my conscience’

THE Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, today cast his vote in the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Ngige, who arrived at his Nkwo-Ide Public Square, Alor Ward 1, polling station 0010 at about 2:57 p.m.,defied the rain like other voters, told newsmen he voted for his choice of candidates.

“I voted for candidates of my choice, according to my conscience, the exercise is very peaceful, the exercise started late, I have come here around 10 a. m. the officers were not here.

“I think they have some logistics problem, they started around 12 p. m. I think Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should extend to make up for the lost time..

“I think the people are enthusiastic to vote the number is quite impressive. I think is going on well here”, he said.

According to him reports of Ogbaru, as at 2:00 p. m., indicates that INCE officials and materials were yet to arrive, especially in Okpoko area.

“That will be disastrous because Okpoko is highly populated area in Anambra North.

“Disenfranchising them will not be good, I want to appealed to INEC authorities and also contact the Residents Electoral Commissioner (REC) to see what they can do about that place”, he said.

Ngige appealed to the electoral empire at polling station 006 and 008, where voters were protesting that INEC officials were threatening to wind up without allowing them to vote.

He urged the INEC officials to extend their time to capture those who have been accredited.

The Presiding Officer in the polling station, Kenneth John, said that there are 328 registered voters in Ngige’s polling station, out of which 105 had already voted.

Peter Obi wins polling unit

THE presidential flagbearer of Labour Party Peter Obi scored 236 votes to win his polling unit 019 Ward 2 in Amatutu village in Agulu Aniocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) recorded zero votes at the unit.

The party agents signed the results and agreed with the outcome.

Thugs snatch ballot boxes, BVAS machines in Rivers, Edo

SUSPECTED thugs have snatched ballot boxes, BVAS machines and other electoral materials in some polling units in Rivers and Edo states.

The hoodlums stormed the polling units in Edo and Rivers and snatched away electoral materials as voters exercised their franchise.

About 30 minutes after accreditation started in Unit 3, Emohua LGA, Rivers State, a group of thugs stormed the polling units with bottles, disrupted the polling exercise and snatched the BVAS machine alongside other materials.

This incident occurred past 11:00 am.

Another BVAS machine was snatched by thugs from Polling Unit 17, Ogbakiri Ward, Emohua LGA, at around 10:00 am.

Thugs also snatched ballot boxes and voting materials at Oredo Ward 4, Unit 42 on Butcher Street in Edo State.

Hoodlums disrupt voting at Igbokushu, Eti-Osa LGA

RESIDENTS of Igbokushu, Eti-Osa Local Government Area (LGA) have raised alarm over activities of hoodlums who disrupted voting process at Ward A, Polling Unit 11.
The incident occurred beside Platinun Entrance, in Igbokushu, Eti-Osa.
The accused persons according to multiple sources were about four in number.
Beside the PU 11 where the incident happened, there were two other PUs close by, still on the same street – PU 9 and 10.
An eye witness who lives close to the PU disclosed that the miscreants came in briefly, and started throwing bottles, and using cutlass to scare people off.
“Some boys just came from nowhere, started throwing bottles, and wedging cutlasses. I think they beleived the labour party was getting more votes,” the source said.
He was not willing to disclose his identity but he told The ICIR, he originally came from Kogi State.
The incident, he said, happened at about 12 noon, and 1pm.
The residents agreed there were no casualties but another eye witness revealed a police woman was injured during the process.
“Immidiately I saw them, I would have started recording because I was outside but I didn’t know their intentions.
“But I saw a policewoman fell like three times while running. She was injured by her left elbow,” he said.
But on spot findings by The ICIR, revealed most of the ballot papers on the floor had Labour Party thumb printed on it.
This newspaper also counted at least three broken ballot boxes, and other thumbprinted ballot papers.
Meanwhile, multiple persons around Platinum Entrance, PU 056, could not vote as of 3:29pm.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were not present even as of the time The ICIR visited.
Multiple persons who spoke to this newspaper, said they also made efforts to contact the officials at the LGA but claimed they lacked sufficient workforce.
The ICIR proceeded to the State Office of INEC to seek official reaction to the development but Adenike Oriowo, the Public Relations Officer, said the commission would respond much later officially.
She didn’t confirm whether or not they lacked enough workforce to cover the affected area

Cases of electoral violence recorded across the nation

AS the Presidential and National Assembly elections holds nationwide today, cases of violence have been recorded across the country.

In Dekna, Kogi State, thugs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) attacked Polling Unit 25 and injured some INEC officials and a Voter.

Some people also got injured when youths disrupted the election process in the Nyong Nyong Polling unit area in Plateau state’s Kanam Local Government Area.

Police officers on duty arrested some of those causing the chaos and took them to Dengi Divisional headquarters Kanam LGA.

In Akwa Ibom, arguments between two people led to the scattering and burning of electoral materials at Lutheran Primary School, Atai Nto Obo, Etim Ekpo, LGA.

A ballot box destruction occurred at Polling unit 01 Abogede, Ankpa, Kogi state, when some youths insisted that the election would not hold in the unit.

Armed men disrupted voting this morning in Akinyele, Aguda Surulere, Lagos, housing polling units 081,082 and 083 and took away the ballot boxes and papers.

Party supporters clashed violently at Angwa- Jama Polling unit in Lokoja, Kogi state.

Volunteers replace INEC adhoc staff who failed to report for duty

SOME voters at Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra, volunteered as adhoc officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to report for election duty.

The volunteers took the place of the adhoc staff to ensure that voting took place at polling units 006, 007 and 008 at Uruokwe Central School in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo LGA.

Reports had it that some NYSC members earlier trained and deployed for election duties at the polling units did not show up on Saturday.

Only the presiding officers who were not corps members reported for duty making some voters to volunteer to serve as adhoc officials.

The development posed a challenge as the volunteers were untrained and had difficulties handling the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and following laid down procedure for the exercise.

It was the same situation at polling units 018 and 019,in Umuanyiegbu Hall, Ward 004, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo LGA.

The presiding officers refused to talk with journalists and efforts to get the Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC, Elizabeth Agwu, to react to the development proved abortive.

INEC begins sorting, counting of votes

SORTING and counting of votes have started in some polling units across the country.

The ICIR reports that presidential and National Assembly elections which is taken place across the 36 states and the FCT are being contested by 18 political parties.

Data from INEC shows that 87,209,007 of registered voters collected their PVCs and would likely be participating in the election. The figure translates to 93.3 per cent of total number of registered voters which is 93,469,008.

Officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) started sorting and counting of votes at around 3:00 pm in most of the some of the polling units visited by The ICIR’s reporters.

In kwara State, polling unit 02, Mogaji Are ward 05, The ICIR observed that the voting process have been concluded and counting of votes commenced around 3:05pm. The INEC official was said to have arrived early in the unit. Also, in the Ajose Ipo area of Kwara State, Polling Unit 01, Ward 20, counting and sorting of votes have started.

Also, in Polling Unit 013, Ward 009, Dugbe of Oyo South Senatorial District, the INEC officials has ended the voting process and begun the counting and sorting of votes.

Similarly, in Ogun State, at Polling Unit 05, Ward 01, Ijebu North-East, the election has already ended and votes have been counted.

The ICIR also gathered that sorting and counting have started in some other part of the country.

Armed thugs snatch ballot boxes in Abuja

HOODLUMS have snatched ballot boxes at the Polling Unit 003, Dagiri community, Gwagwalada Area Council in Abuja.

The incident happened at about 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, as the Presidential and National Assembly election was ongoing.

The thugs also attacked two other polling centres at the Wazobia Park of Gwagwalada town. 

The ICIR reporter visited the three polling units attacked by the thugs. 

The polling centre at Dagiri is less than 500 metres away from those at Wazobia Park.

Many witnesses who spoke with The ICIR said two thugs, armed with cutlasses and knives, first came and scattered the centres.

They left and returned with more members when they could not successfully chase the people away during the first attack. 

While they succeeded in snatching and going away with ballot boxes at Dagiri, they couldn’t go with those at Wazobia Park because the voters prevented them.

However, all the thugs escaped.

The ICIR learnt that the hoodlums attacked and broke the leg of one Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer at the Dagiri polling unit.

A few minutes after the attacks, a combined security team comprising the Army, Police, Immigration, NSCDC, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), Federal Road Safety Corps and others stormed the centres and appealed to raging crowds of voters.

They urged the voters to help them locate the residence of any of the hoodlums they could identify.

They also ensured that voting continued at Wazobia Park while they stayed with them.

Voters, mainly people from the South-East extraction, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow them to recast their votes.

The ICIR reporter noted that all the Commission’s officials and party agents had vanished from the centre.

The ICIR saw damaged election materials, broken chairs and tables, and other things destroyed at the polling units.

The ICIR reported how FCT residents made panic fuel buying and searched for Naira on Friday.

According to INEC, there are 1,570,307 registered voters in the FCT. The number of PVC collected is 1476,451, giving 94.0 per cent of registered voters. The number of uncollected PVCs is 93,868, being 6.0 per cent of registered voters.

A total of 93,469,008 were registered for the poll, out of which 87,209,007 have collected their PVC.

Four leading presidential candidates are Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwanso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
