He said the gesture is a “great inspiration for our furtherance of bilateral exchanges and cooperation in educational field between Nigeria and China.”

Parents and relatives of the beneficiaries were present at the ceremony.

Again, Militants Threaten To Declare Niger Delta Republic

Niger-Delta-Avengers---

The militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, has again threatened to declare Niger Delta Republic on October 1.

This is the second of such threat in the last two months, after another militant group called Adaka Boro Avengers, decided not to go ahead with its plans to declare a republic.

The militant group had said that they were prevailed upon by prominent Niger Delta leaders, including former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The NDA, released a statement issued through its spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, warning that if the country under President Muhammadu Buhari does not retrace its step, they will declare a Republic for the region.

The Statement read, “The October 1st, declaration of independence is still sacrosanct if the Nigerian government fails to retrace its step by restructuring this country.

“Our prayer for Buhari and the Northern hypocrite (Northern Governors) is that oil should be found in commercial quantity in the North, so they can let the Niger Delta go.

“The Buhari Led government has failed Nigerians with their misdirected policies that have divided the country; as such nobody wants to be part of that failed state not even the Niger Delta.”

There were media reports early this week indicating that the federal government may have begun probe of Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former president, for his alleged role in bombings of oil installations in the Niger Delta.

Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta,MEND, had repeatedly accused the former president of being one of the sponsors of the NDA-an allegation he has denied.

APC To PDP: You Have No Right To Criticise Buhari On Economy

APC National Chairman, John Oyegun

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has said that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has no moral right to criticize Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency or to comment on the state of the Nation’s economy.

A statement by the media office of the APC National Chairman, John Oyegun, pointed out that the present administration is “working hard to clear the mess left behind by the disgraced former ruling party.”

Oyegun stated that the opposition party should rather show remorse and penitence “for presiding over the mindless looting of the nation’s treasury,” and not to “now put itself up as the saviour of Nigerians.”

The APC Chairman added that “Nigerians, who are now bearing the brunt of the economy that was mindlessly mismanaged by the PDP, cannot forget in a hurry that some $15 billion – which is about half of the nation’s foreign reserves at the end of the tenure of the PDP-led Federal Government – was mismanaged under the guise of equipping the military, when in reality the funds were largely salted away by PDP fat cats.”

“Nigerians are also not unaware that just before the last general elections, some $2.1 billion was shared out to just a few PDP faithful, either to be used for praying against Boko Haram or for phantom communication purposes, when in reality the soldiers whom the money was meant to equip were dying in droves.”

Oyegun alleged that for the 16 years that the PDP lasted in power, there was no difference between the party’s finances and the Nigerian treasury.

He said that it was mind-boggling discoveries how “just a handful of people could have plundered far more than half of what belonged to a country of over 170 million people!”

The APC Chairman’s statement read in part: “What is happening now is clear: Just because the farmer has not checkmated the thief, he (thief) has become so emboldened that he is now making a move to even cage the farmer from whom he has been stealing.”

“How else can one characterize the most annoying statement by the PDP that it is on a mission to rescue Nigeria, the tale of a killer presenting himself as a life saver!

“Are these people jokers? Do they think Nigerians do not realize that the stage for today’s tough economic situation was set by the same PDP that is now masquerading as a saviour?

“Nigeria is currently in ICU (Intensive Care Unit), after it was rescued from PDP.  Yet, the same PDP has the audacity to constantly pillory the ‘doctors’ trying to save the ‘patient’,” he said.

The fact that our country and people survived the PDP and the last administration is perhaps the 8th wonder of the world.

Oyegun appealed to Nigerians not to succumb to the antics of the PDP but to continue to support the efforts of the present Administration, which is working day and night to ease the impact of the tough economic situation on the citizens.

The Nigerian Navy Ship, NWAMBA, has rescued a merchant Tanker vessel from sea pirates who attacked it off the shore of Bonny.

The rescue operation was in response to a timely alert sent by the International Maritime Bureau, IMB, to the Naval Regional Maritime Awareness Centre, RMAC.

Christian Ezekobe, Director of Information in the Nigerian Navy in a press release on Thursday said that the British flagged vessel named “MT VECTIS OSPREY” left the Bonny offshore terminal and came under pirate attack on Wednesday.

However, the Navy Ship engaged the attackers on approaching the vessel, forcing them to abandon their mission due to superior fire power.

The occupants of the vessel, who had locked themselves up in a compartment in the merchant tanker, were subsequently rescued.

Ezekobe stated that “The crew and cargo of MT VECTIS OSPREY are safe while investigation has also commenced in order to unravel the circumstances of the attempted hijack, especially with regard to the current trend of involvement of crew members in attacks on their own vessels.”

He advised Ship owners to always “profile their crew before embarking them onboard to avoid situations in which some disgruntled crew members stage-manage attacks on their own vessels.”

“The Nigerian Navy wishes to seize this opportunity to remind the public, particularly those operating in the maritime environment that the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas is poised to eliminate all forms of criminal activities in the maritime domain, hence several initiatives have been made in this regard,

“To mention a few, the initiatives are the conduct of operation TSARE TEKU, Choke point regime and the deployment of capital ships for daily patrol. It is worthy to note that these measures have drastically reduced incidents of sea piracy and other crimes on our territorial waters.”

Two thousand internally displaced persons, IDPs, in both Adamawa and Borno States have been trained in entrepreneurial skills in the last two years by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

The Managing Director of A. I. Development Services, an implementing agency for CBN entrepreneurship development in the North East, Abubakar Gusau, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing.

Abubakar said the IDPs were part of about 7,000 persons trained in the six Northeastern states from January 2013 to June 2016 as part of contract between his company and CBN to develop entrepreneurial skills of Nigerians living in the North East.

He said the programme had assisted in creating 4,136 jobs and helped graduates of the scheme to access fund as well as assist in building existing businesses.

Abubakar whose company has a five year contract (2013-2017) to trained individuals on entrepreneurial skills with the CBN, lamented that many persons in the country continue to wallow in poverty even with opportunities to make wealth present all around them.

He said many Nigerians have no business to be poor and definitely no need to flee to other countries in search of the Golden Fleece.

He said all that is needed for the citizens of the country to be wealthy is a change of mindset and attitude, explaining that his company was contracted by the CBN to build this.

Abubakar said: “We are not actually teaching people vocational skills, ours is a mindset re-orientation. To be a businessman you have to have the mindset of a businessman and that is what the CBN thought was missing,

“We have so far trained more than 1,000 from Borno IDPs camps and we have also trained 1, 000 in Adamawa IDPs camp,

“The training is designed towards  unlocking the potentials of the beneficiaries to find alternative business opportunities that would enabled them become self-reliant.

1

Jigawa state commissioner of police, Henry Fadairo, has said that less than one month after he took over the police command in the state, the command has charged 53 people to court over rape and sodomy.

Fadairo, who spoke to journalists in Dutse on Thursday, said the cases include 28 rape and 25 sodomy cases.

He noted that this was done in line with the desire of the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that those involve in this kind of inhuman crimes are made to face the wrath of the law.

The police boss called on parents, religious and traditional rulers to rise up against the rising spate of rape and sodomy in the state.

He said rape and sodomy are becoming prevalent in the state and urged that “something must be done very fast to stop it.”

He added that, “I have started parading them publicly and the idea is to make their prosecution serve as a deterrent to others.”

According to him, soon after he assumed office, “a compliant was received from Hadejia Police station that one Idris Abdu, 40, took a girl of nine years to his room and had canal knowledge of her. He confessed to have committed the crime, and he has been charged to Court.

“Also of recent,  a father of a girl of 10 years reported at Gumel Police station that he saw his daughter with some money. When he asked her how she got the money, the girl narrated that she got the money from one Mohammed Abdullahi, a 40-year old man who took her into his room and had canal knowledge of her.

“According to the girl’s father, another man identified as Nasiru Mohammed who is 25-year old compelled her and took her into an uncompleted building and had canal knowledge of her. She further revealed that the same Mohammed Abdullahi had the same shameful act with her friend who is 10 years old.

“The father of the second victim also reported the case. The culprits confessed to their crimes, revealing that they had canal knowledge of the minors on several occasions.”

Fadairo further stated that in Garki Local Government Area of the state, “a mother of eight-year old girl reported to the Police that when her daughter was on her way to school, the Village Head of Kargo village, Abubakar Ya’u who is 60 years, blocked her and took her into his room and raped the girl.”

He said investigations by the police indicated that the Village Head committed the crime, adding that the suspect will soon be charged to court for prosecution. He particularly called on parents to be conscious of the movement of their children, adding that there was need to discourage the menace of teenage girls hawking on the street.

On armed robbery, Fadairo said his Command has successfully clamped down on a notorious robbery gang using army-camouflage to terrorize villagers and travelers in areas like Kaugama, Hadejia, Mallam-madori, Maigatari, Gumel, Taura and Garki Local Government Area of the state.

While assuring Jigawa residents of a crime-free society, Fadairo, however, vowed to deal decisively with criminals and unscrupulous elements whose business is to drag the good image of Jigawa state to the mud.

Buhari Tasks African Central Banks On Innovative Solutions To Economic Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged African Central banks to come up with innovative monetary policies that would improve the economy of the continent.

He made the call on Thursday during the opening of the Annual Meeting of the Association of African Central Banks, in Abuja.

The President noted that Africa is faced with many challenges especially with the dwindling price of crude oil in the international market and the decision by China, Africa’s major economic partner, to remodel its economy, leading to a slowdown in its involvement in Africa.

“Faced with these challenges, … I urge you to continue to look for original home-grown solutions, not to rely on “fit for all purposes” prescriptions handed down from abroad. The world is a dynamic place and with innovation, we can survive,” Buhari said.

He added: “Those of us who rely on only natural resources such as Nigeria, Angola, South Africa, and Mozambique have been hit the hardest.

“We have also had to contend with the effect of the Ebola Virus Disease, which struck some countries in the West-African Sub-region.

“Furthermore, China, a major trade and business partner to a number of African countries is currently slowing down as it remodels its economy, sparking fears of further weakening.”

President Buhari commended the continents Apex Banks for their efforts so far at sustaining the economy and ensuring that Africa remains afloat.

Buhari Meets with African Central Banks Authorities2

“African Central Banks have been at their best in keeping African economies afloat through proactive and effective combination of conventional and innovative monetary policies,” he said.

He added that “In Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria has for many years spearheaded economic stimulus measures through specific intervention programmes. I think these measures should be sustained through good times and through difficult times.”

The President however noted that “monetary policy alone is not sufficient to bring about desired economic growth. We must carefully balance monetary and fiscal policy measures.

He went further to enumerate his administration’s strategy towards growing the Nation’s economy.

Buhari said: “For us in Nigeria, while recognizing the challenges we are confronted with and the need to surmount them, we are determined to diversify the economy away from excessive reliance on oil and other primary products.

“Consequently, we are taking measures and implementing policies that would ensure we are self-sufficient, generate massive employment for millions of our youth, and explore our untapped human and natural resources.

“We shall also embark on export and production diversification steps including investment in infrastructure; promotion of manufacturing through agro-based industries and expansion of Regional Trade.

“All these would involve integrating the informal economy into the mainstream and providing funds to Small and Medium Enterprises.

“We shall also continue, with greater determination and focus to pursue our goal of ensuring improved security for our country and its citizens, and without letting up on our fight against corruption and terrorism.”

He urged the continent’s financial sector to intensify surveillance and give guidance to the operations of financial institutions to reverse the trend of illicit flows of funds out of Africa.

“We should all be serious in putting place measures aimed at ensuring that the proceeds of these illicit flows are repatriated to their countries of origin with minimal bureaucratic hitches,” Buhari said.

The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture has commenced the process of activating the Presidential Council on Tourism, PCT, as part of efforts to fast-track the development of tourism in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this in Abuja when he received the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria, FTAN, on a courtesy visit to his office.

He said that the resuscitation of the PCT was one of the recommendations adopted at the National Summit on Tourism and Culture, organised by the Ministry in April, as a strategy to make tourism a viable sector of the economy.

According to the minister, the Presidential Council on Tourism, is the highest advisory body on tourism in Nigeria, and is comprised of the Ministers of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Works, Power and Housing, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Health, Environment, Aviation and Transport, as well as the President of FTAN.

Mohammed noted there is renewed vigour in the present administration to focus more on tourism, with a view to turning around the fortunes of the economy.

“We are very confident that tourism will very soon become another veritable source of revenue for the government and employment for our youths, by the time we are able to provide the missing infrastructure, because the biggest challenge for us is how do we turn our tourist sites to tourist attractions?

“We can’t do that alone in the ministry of Information and Culture. We will need the support and collaboration of not just other ministries but also the practitioners in tourism,” he said.

The Minister noted that the ministry is already partnering with the UN World Tourism Organisation, the British Council and the Tony Elumelu Foundation on how to revive the tourism sector, particularly in the collation of data for effective planning.

He said a Steering Committee meeting, which will draft the agenda for the inaugural session of the PCT, will hold on Sept. 6th 2016.

FTAN President, Tomi Akingbogu, commended the minister for adopting innovative ideas to address some of the challenges affecting tourism development in Nigeria,

He praised President Buhari’s efforts in tackling security issues in the country, which he noted has also adversely affected the country’s tourism development.

Scores Feared Dead In Abakaliki Jailbreak Attempt

Many inmates are feared dead as many others were injured following a failed jailbreak attempt in Abakaliki federal prison, Ebonyi state.

Vanguard quoted unconfirmed sources as saying that more than 14 persons were killed including one prison officer.

The sources added that both the dead and the injured were taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA.

According to the report by Vanguard, trouble had begun early Thursday morning when the prisoners revolted against poor treatment by prison authorities, especially inadequate feeding in the prison.

The angry inmates reportedly started rioting inside the prison and used every object within their reach to attack prison officers and consequently injured many.

Prison officers, it was learned, returned fire for fire which resulted in the killing of several inmates while many others sustained gunshot wounds.

It was reported that a combined team of the prison officers, Nigeria police and Army quickly drafted to the scene, prevented the inmates from escaping as they had already over-powered the warders.

Soldiers and Policemen had to cordon off all roads leading to the Abakaliki prisons.

Gunshots were heard intermittently as police and soldiers try to recover a firearm allegedly snatched from one of the prison officers by the inmates.

According to the report, the inmates had already succeeded in creating an opening in the wall before anti-riot policemen arrived and heavily tear-gassed them into submission.

The Abakiliki prison is said to be located beside the Ebonyi State police headquarters, which could be the reason for the prompt intervention by the police.

Already, the Commander of the military cantonment and the state’s commissioner of Police had visited the prison area and are directing the operations to restore sanity in the prison.
