The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has urged the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs to use its influence to admonish members on the need to respect the rights of other citizens in carrying out their activities.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the police spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, an Acting Commissioner of Police, Arase made the call when Leaders of the Council, which is the umbrella body of all Islamic groups in the country, paid him a visit at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Led by its secretary general, Ishaq Oloyede, the Council said the purpose of the visit was to thank the police chief for his leadership role and to use the opportunity to find a solution to the recent clash between the Shiite Islamic group and the Nigerian military, adding that there is need for a thorough investigation into the cause of the clash to prevent future occurrence.

The Council also appealed for medical attention for the Shiite members detained in connection with the incidence.

Responding, Arase thanked the Council leaders and assured that the police and other security agencies are conscious of the rights of Nigerians and are determined to safeguard them.

He further stated that there would be an investigation into the clash between the Shiite and the military.
