Police confirm fire incident at INEC office in Akwa Ibom during local government poll

THE police have confirmed a fire incident at the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

The AKISIEC is conducting a local government election in the state today, Saturday, October 5.

According to a report, the police public relations officer in the state, Timfon John, confirmed the incident.

She said the electoral materials meant for the election were not affected by the fire.

John said that the police command in the state had reinforced security at all the AKISIEC offices and other strategic locations.

“Some hoodlums partly touched the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom, but election materials remained intact, the election is also ongoing,” she said.

Voters’ apathy and late arrival of election materials were said to have marred the exercise.

Earlier today, The ICIR reported an explosion rocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat in Port Harcourt before the commencement of the local government poll in River State.

The blast caused significant damage to the party’s office, heightening security concerns ahead of the poll.
