Dino Melaye, representative of Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, has been declared wanted by the Kogi State Police Command.
Ali Janga, Commissioner of Police in the state, made this known in a statement on Wednesday.
Also declared wanted alongside Melaye, is Mohammed Audu, son of Abubakar Audu, late former Governor of the state.
Janga also stated that both Melaye and Audu have been placed on Interpol watch list for allegedly providing false information to the police about an assassination attempt on Melaye in 2017.
While addressing reporters on Wednesday, Janga said the two suspects paraded earlier this month for illegal possession of firearms allegedly given to them by Melaye, had escaped from police custody.
Both men were part of six inmates who escaped from the detention facility at the headquarters of the Kogi State Police Command in Lokoja on Wednesday.
There had been reports that Melaye had fled the country in order to evade arrest, but he dismissed the reports as untrue, insisting he had committed no crime.
“Those who know me will never believe the lies of Sahara Reporters about calling some senators,” he tweeted. “I’m in Nigeria and been attending social functions across states. I have committed no offence so why should I run? They are after my life but God is my muscle.”
