The Nigerian Police in Rivers State said it has uncovered plans for protests to be staged by two different groups supporting and opposing former governor Rotimi Amaechi, who has been nominated as a minister by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The police warned that it would not tolerate any breach of the peace by anybody.
In a statement issued by the state command’s spokesperson, Ahmad Muhammad, the police said it will take necessary actions to prevent unlawful conducts and called on those behind the planned protests to give up the idea.
“The Commissioner of Police hereby warns these groups to jettison the plan to stage the protest so as not truncate the existing peaceful co-existence in the State,” the statement read.
It warned further: “While the Command respects the individuals’ right of peaceful assembly, it will not tolerate a situation where such protests will lead to breach of public peace and breakdown of law and order.”
Calling on the people to remain peaceful, the police said it is determined to discharge its lawful mandate of ensuring public peace and security.
