THE welfare of journalists and other workers in media houses must be seen as a priority for proprietors who desire to run their outfits sustainably and profitably.
Mmaduakolam Gregg, a senior editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said this at a conference on media sustainability held to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja on Wednesday.
“If journalists’ welfare is not seen as a priority, there’s no way to achieve media sustainability,” Gregg said.
He expressed concerns that many media organisations owe their employees, especially journalists who labour to get content.
Gregg also called on media owners and relevant authorities in the country to look into the issue.
The ICIR‘s 10th Anniversary celebration showcased the newspaper’s achievements in Nigeria and internationally within the limited time the company has operated.
Media proprietors, veteran journalists and top government functionaries attended the event.
