At least six people died and 10 others were injured on Friday evening as a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at a market in Gombe, Gombe State.
The spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, in Gombe State, Umar Shittu, however expressed fears that there might actually be more casualties as the market is normally crowded.
A source from the police command revealed that the bomb was detonated around 6:30 pm at Kasuwan Mata, close to the Gombe State University, killing the suicide bomber and six others while ten people suffered injuries.
The source who was contacted via phone also revealed that a second and more serious disaster was averted earlier on Friday afternoon when as a vehicle laden with five large explosiveswas intercepted.
“A vehicle was intercepted at Dadin Kowa road with five large explosives. The vehicle was loaded with furniture and other items for a marriage ceremony, but the police on patrol became suspicious and stopped the vehicle for a search,” he said.
According to the source, the driver of the vehicle” tried to bribe them with N200 which they refused”.
He said that the driver attemped to run away when the officers started searching the vehicle but he was arrested
