In the last year, three African nations have expressed intent to begin the lengthy and complicated withdrawal process -- Burundi, Gambia and South Africa.
All is set for Morocco to rejoin the African Union at the 28th African summit which will be held between January 30 and January 31 in Addis-Ababa, having left the pan African organisation more than three decades ago.
Morocco has formally announced its wish to re-join the African Union, 32 years after it left the organisation.
Morocco left the AU in 1984 after the organisation recognised the independence of Western Sahara, an area Morocco describes as part of the country's "southern provinces".
