The Chief justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, has urged Nigerians to desist from making disparaging remarks about the nation’s judiciary but rather to approach the National Judicial Council in cases of perceived wrong doing by judicial officers.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo administered the oath of office after which he also conferred on the CJN the award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON, which is the second highest honour in Nigeria.

Following the retirement of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mahmud Mohammed, after attaining the compulsory retirement age of 70, President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Walter Onnoghen as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The Federal Government has filled a 9-count charge of money laundering and corruption against a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Sylvester Ngwuta.

The National Judicial Council, NJC, has launched a National Judicial Policy, NJP, as well as inaugurated the Ethics Standing Committee.

Following recent developments in the Judiciary with regards to allegations of corruption among top judicial officers, the National Judicial Council, NJC, has announced a new set of regulations, barring judges and other court staff from accepting any form of gift from the other arms of government.
