The Ogun State Elections Petitions Tribunal on Friday set aside the election of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Buruji Kashamu, as senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District for violation of electoral law in the March 28 presidential and senatorial elections.
The tribunal ordered new elections in 110 polling units
Oladapo Abiodun and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had challenged Kashamu’s election on the grounds that he was not qualified to contest the election because of his indictment in the United States on drug related offences and that there was widespread rigging of the process in favour of the defendant.
Backed by a team made up of 18 lawyers led by Yusuf Ali, Ricky Tarfa and Abiodun Owonikoko, all Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Abiodun asked the tribunal to declare him winner or in the alternative cancel the election and order the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a new one.
The three-man tribunal was headed by Ebiowei Tobi, with Adekunle Lawal and Quadi Adamu Usman as members.
