A minimum of 20 Muslim worshippers have been killed at first count following a suicide bomb attack at a mosque in Mubi, Adamawa State, on Tuesday morning.
The figures were later updated to 50, with a likelihood of a further hike.
Witnesses said the attack occurred during morning prayers when an unknown boy ran into the mosque.
A resident who gave his name simply as Bello said he counted more than 20 dead bodies after the blast.
“As people converged on Massalacin Madina at Anguwan Shuwa to observe Subh (morning prayer), an unknown man rammed himself into the mosque with IEDs, killing many people,” Bello said.
“As I am talking to you, I saw over 20 dead with many injured.”
Also speaking on the attack, Musa Bello, Chairman of Mubi North Local Government Area, corroborated the earlier report.
“The suicide bomber struck at the mosque during the morning prayer,” he said. “For now we are still compiling the casualty figure.”
Bello said the injured had been taken to a hospital.
