Donald Trump was on Friday sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America with a promise to make American interests the focus of his presidency.
Delivering his inaugural speech, Trump praised former President Barack Obama for the smooth transition which he described as “Magnificent.”
Trump took a swipe at the political establishment in Washinton for “failing” the people, stressing that his Presidency will be all about the American people.
He noted that the politicians in Washington ” flourished, but the people did not share in its wealth.”
“We are transferring power from Washington DC and giving it back to you, the people,” he said.
“This is your day, this is your celebration, and this, the United States of America, is your country.
“The forgotten men and woman of our country will be forgotten no longer. Everyone is listening to you now.
“What truly matters is not which party controls our government. But whether our country is controlled by the people,” he said.
President Trump said the days are over when America enriched other countries of the world and empowered their militaries to its own detriment.
He said: “We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon. One by one, the factories have left our shores.
“The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and redistributed all across the world.
“From this day forward it’s going to be only America first, America first!”
“I will fight for you with every breath in my body and I will never ever let you down.
“America will start winning again and winning like never ever before.”
On the security of the Nation, President Trump eulogized the country’s armed forces, saying that “There should be no fear,” before adding that “Most importantly we will be protected by God.”
He said: “We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic Terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth.”
Trump, however, had no word, kind or otherwise, for the former presidents that attended the inauguration, nor for his Democratic opponent and former Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton.
This, analysts say did not help to address the obvious disunity and cracks that followed the US presidential election.
Political analyst, Mike Cornfield, associate professor of Political Management at the George Washington University, told reporters that he thought President Trump’s address was the “angriest inaugural address” he had ever heard.
Cornfield said he thought the Trump’s approach was “confrontational”, “vintage populism” and “extraordinary for a man who did not win the popular vote and did not fill this Mall”.
And as if to further lend credence to the racial twist that Trump’s Presidency had assumed, former KKK leader, David Duke posted a three-word congratulatory message to the new President on twitter saying: “we did it.”
