Three explosions disrupted the Friday Jumaa’t service at the Emir of Kano’s mosque in Kano sending worshippers scampering for safety.
Reports reveal that the bombs exploded just as the weekly prayers commenced.
The bombs exploded in an outdoor courtyard while the Emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was inside the mosque.
There is no information regarding casualties at the moment.
Policemen in the vicinity reportedly began firing shot indiscriminately in the melee that ensued after the blasts, causing worshippers to flee for safety.
The Emir had last week called on northerners to rise up in arms against the insurgents while expressing doubts that the military could indeed protect civilians or end the insurgency.
It is not yet clear whether the incident which occurred today was aimed at the Emir for the call he made last week.
The seat of the Emir of Kano is an exalted position in Nigeria, especially among Muslims and in Islamic clerical ranking, he is preceded only by the Sultan of Sokoto.
Sanusi, who was coronated as Emir earlier this year, is the immediate past head of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
