By Musdapha Ilo, Maiduguri

The Borno State government said that it has commenced investigations into circumstances that led to the mysterious death of an internally displaced person, IDP, in Maiduguri.

One person, it was learnt, has been arrested and is being questioned in connection with the incident which occurred at the Shettima Ali Monguno Teachers Village IDP ‎camp in the Borno State capital on Thursday.

In a statement issued and signed by his media aide, Isa Gusau, the Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, said, however, that contrary to media reports that the deceased was beheaded, his body was found intact, although it had some bruises on it.

Gusau said that the governor “received with utter shock and sadness information concerning the murder of an internally displaced person whose body was found at the Shettima Ali Monguno Teachers Village ‎camp on Thursday.”

The governor’s spokesman said that the victim is male and that he was “not found beheaded” but “tied with bruises on his head apparently resulting from hits.”

“The fully fenced camp located at Pompamari, near the headquarters of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, hosts 13,000 displaced persons from Ngala and Kukawa local government areas while two Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Ngala and Kukawa alongside police men under their formations live at the camp as part of security measures long adopted by government,” the statement indicated.

Gusau stated that the governor was very disturbed by the incident and had ordered a thorough investigation by the police, while also demanding the arrest of anyone found culpable.

He disclosed that the executive chairman of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Garba Satomi, told the governor that the police had arrested a displaced person in connection with the attack and that more suspects were being trailed.
