The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested two young men suspected of being members of a syndicate that specialises in internet fraud, commonly known in Nigeria as “yahoo Yahoo”.

The suspects were arrested in Asaba, the Delta State capital and will soon be arraigned on a 13-count charge bordering on alleged Internet fraud, e mail hacking and obtaining money by false pretence before the Federal High Court, Asaba.

The two men, Arinze Ihekwo and Chinemelu Utaku, are believed to have hacked into the email accounts of some unnamed persons with a view to accessing their bank account information and withdrawing money from them.

According to a statement by the EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, the commission commenced investigation into the syndicate’s activities after a report filed to it by the Department of State Service, DSS.

According to the statement, the DSS report showed that “one Clifford Okemmuo had, in a separate matter, disclosed that Ihekwo,( a.k.a. Christian Ihekwo Arinze), belongs to a syndicate that specializes in cloning unsuspecting victims’ emails in order to trap their financial related transaction.”
