Lagos State is in the news every year for numerous incidents of flooding, which usually destroy property and sometimes claim lives.
The latest, on Saturday, spawned arguments over the real cause cause. While some say it is the effect of climate change, others think it’s simply the consequence of the construction of buildings on canals and drainage ways, thereby blocking the water ways.
Regardless of their beliefs, Lagosians ‘took over Twitter’ on Saturday to discuss the matter — and there were some funny tweets, including one saying ‘flooding is taking over’.

Actually I think Lagos’ flooding is largely ‘drainage’ flooding, not ‘global-warming’ flooding. This is rainwater, not lagoon/ocean water. https://t.co/z4AkG2WUoH

Lagos cannot substantially fix its flooding issue without a correctional demolition of buildings. Who is ready for the socio-political cost? https://t.co/lhDej7Qu5W

My Grandpa as a Surveyor devoted a good number of his Years to Lagos Town Planning..I have seen Houses built where Canals were planned

????…buildings are constructed on top of the areas for drainages in most parts of town. The planning of Lagos had been wrong since inception.

Drainage or not, Lagos is below sea level and will flood every year. Global warming has ensured that much ????

Why does Lagos really have a flood problem despite all the money the state makes? How can we ensure it doesn’t happen again?

The thing that surprises me about the Lagos flood is that I heard it happens EVERY year. Like every year Lagos people swim so easily.
