Nigerian Army Asks Officers To Declare Assets

The army has directed all its officers to declare their assets with immediate effect.

The directive was issued by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Yusuf Buratai, a Lieutenant General, on Wednesday at a conference held with principal staff officers and directors serving at the Army Headquarters.

A statement issued on Thursday and signed by acting Director Army Public Relations, Sani Kukasheka Usman, a Colonel, noted that Buratai had declared his own assets, first, upon his appointment as Commander, Multinational Joint Task Force in May 2015 and also as soon as he was appointed as Chief of Army Staff in July 2015.

“This directive is in order, considering the fact that all military officers are having Presidential Commission and are public servants, as well as subject to both civil and military laws,” Usman stated.

He said further that the directive was in order “given the current drive of the country for probity and accountability”, adding that “the Nigerian Army should not only key in but should be one of the key drivers for such laudable project.”

Only last week, the Comptroller General of Customs, Hammed Ali, a retired Colonel, directed all officers of the Service to declare their assets, giving them a 14 day deadline.
