THE Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library (NYPL) is inviting applications for its 2027–2028 Fellowship, which offers selected scholars and writers a $90,000 stipend to pursue their projects using the library’s extensive research collections.
The fellowship is open to academics, independent scholars, journalists, creative writers, translators and visual artists with aim to support high-quality writing and scholarship while creating opportunities for fellows to engage with other researchers, writers and the wider public.
The Cullman Center awards 15 fellowships annually for a nine-month residential programme running from September 7, 2027, to May 26, 2028.
Successful applicants will receive a $90,000 stipend, a private office with a computer and full access to the Library’s physical and electronic research resources.
The opportunity is open to international applicants, including foreign nationals who are conversant in English.
Applicants must demonstrate that their proposed project will benefit substantially from the NYPL’s research collections. Eligible fields include anthropology, art, geography, history, languages and literature, philosophy, politics, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, sports and urban studies.
The fellowship is particularly relevant to journalists working on book-length or substantial research projects; nonfiction and creative writer; novelists, playwrights and poets; academics and independent scholars; translators; and visual artists working on book projects.
However, the fellowship does not support research projects leading directly to a degree, including graduate-school dissertation research.
The fellowship is residential. Selected fellows are expected to work primarily at the Cullman Center in New York City five days a week, Monday to Friday, throughout the fellowship period.
Fellows will also participate in intellectual exchanges at the Centre and present their work-in-progress during the fellowship.
