NIGERIA’S Tobi Amusan broke the record in the women’s 100 metres hurdles to win gold at the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon, in the United States, on Sunday.
Amusan who is the current Commonwealth Champion beat Jamaica’s Britany Anderson who finished second and Olympic Champion from Cuba, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who came third.
Last year, Camacho-Quinn crossed the finish line in 12.37 seconds to win gold at the women’s 100 metres hurdles in the Summer Olympics held in Tokyo.
The feat performed by Amusan at Sunday’s final was executed in 12.06 seconds, better than the 12.12 seconds world record she set in the semi-finals two hours earlier.
Amusan’s performance at the final was initially announced as a world record, but later ruled ineligible as the wind speed exceeded the legal limit.
“The goal was to come out and to win this gold. I believe in my abilities, but I was not expecting a world record at these championships. You know, the goal is always just to execute well and get the win. So the world record is a bonus,” Amusan said.
Three years ago, Amusan finished fourth at the World Championships in Doha. Her performance only improved from there, and she posted a personal best of 12.41 seconds at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Paris in June before traveling to Eugene for the World Championships.
