South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was released from jail on Monday night and will be held under house arrest for the remainder of the five year he got for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
South African officials freed the Paralympian star from prison in the nation’s capital, Pretoria a day early than scheduled, which is considered a plot to avoid media coverage.
Pistorius, 28, was granted parole following several delays to his original release date after he had served 18 months of his five-year sentence for shooting dead Steenkemp, a model and law graduate.
The spokesman for the Pistorius family, Anneliese Burgess, said that he was at his uncle Arnold’s house in Pretoria, adding that the family was “hunkered down”.
Meanwhile, the correctional services department spokesman, Manelisi Wolela confirmed that “Oscar Pistorius was placed under correctional supervision tonight,”
“The handling of the actual placement is an operational matter of the local management, and how they handle it is their prerogative that is carried out in the best interest of all parties concerned, the victims, the offender and the Department of Correctional Services,” said.
