APC, PDP, Labour Party Demand Cancellation Of Anambra Election

0

Even as collation of results continued on Monday in Anambra state following the end of the gubernatorial election held on Saturday and Sunday, three political parties have said they will contest the results, demanding an outright cancellation of the exercise.

Even before the results are known or announced, they have been contested by the All Progressive Congress, APC, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Labour Party, LP, which alleged that the logistic problems encountered during the election were deliberately contrived by INEC to deny thousands the opportunity to vote.

They called for a total cancellation of the Anambra governorship election over massive disenfranchisement of registered voters across the state.

Both the APC and PDP had boycotted the rescheduled election in Idemili North Local Government Area on Sunday, describing the exercise as “a charade and mockery of democracy”.

Coming together to address a news conference on Sunday, the trio of Chris Ngige of APC, Tony Nwoye of PDP and Ifeanyi Ubah of LP called for the cancellation of the election, expressing dismay at the conduct.

Ngige, who acted as spokesman for the three, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a fresh poll in the state.

“Our stand is that the election which started yesterday (Saturday) has been beset with a lot of irregularities and fraudulent practices and therefore, we reject the poll and its subsequent outcome,” he said.

He said the decision was predicated on fraudulent malpractices as the election did not conform to the Electoral Act.

“There were massive and gross irregularities in the voters’ register used for the poll throughout the 21 local government areas by the electoral officers. Voters were disenfranchised in all the three senatorial zones and we, therefore, reject the result and its outcome,” he said.

The APC candidate alleged the poll was also marred by the non-issuance of result sheets by electoral officers in some areas as well as the disappearance of result sheets in others.

He said that result sheets were deliberately distributed to different polling units rather than the ones they were designed for, saying that it was a ploy against the protesting candidates in their strongholds.

“For instance, result sheets in Uke, Oraukwu and Abatete were found in Ogidi and Nkpor even when they were coded with the same number at the polling units,” he noted.

He also said that there was massive deployment of security agents to harass their agents who were forcefully removed from polling units.

“At a point, they alleged that our agents’ identity cards were forged,” he added.

On his part, Ubah said the integrity of INEC was at stake and urged its leadership to toe the path of honour by conducting a fresh poll.

He said the commission should not allow a situation where it would go down in history that it supported fraud.

Also contributing, Nwoye, who aligned himself with the Ngige and Ubah, said the election was a charade.

Gov Al-Makura Marks Birthday With N2 Million Donation To The Disabled

By Godwin Ojoshimite

As part of efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the less privileged, governor Umar Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has donated the sum of N2 million to disabled persons in the state.

The governor made the donation while celebrating his 61st birthday in Lafia, Friday.

According to the governor, the token is in line with his administrations commitment to assist the down trodden in the state by giving them hope and making them see reasons to live.

He explained that, “500 thousand is for the blind, the lame will also get 500 thousand, while the deaf and dumb will also get 500 thousand naira each.”

Al-Makura pointed out that being disabled is not the end of life as according to him, he became the governor of the state as a person with hearing impairment.

The governor also disclosed that his administration had mapped out plans to build schools for the disabled in Lafia, Akwanga, Keffi and Karu.

Expressing his appreciation, the chairman of the Joint Association of Disable Persons, Andrew Awu, thanked the governor for his kind gesture towards the less privileged in the state.

He assured the governor of the unflinching support of all disables in the state, towards achieving his administration’s objective.

Anambra Holds Flawed Governorship Election

0

The Anambra gubernatorial election was held Saturday amid late or non arrival of election materials and allegations of vote rigging.

Election materials arrived early in some polling units but arrived very late in others delaying accreditation and voting.

The major complaint was the inability of registered voters to find their names in the register, which automatically disqualified them from voting.

Tony Nwoye, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was among those whose names were declared missing from the voters’ register at his Offia-nta ward in Nsugbe.

Also missing from the register were the names of his father and uncle.

Also, voters in Akabo Ward 3 in Nnewichi of Nnewi Local Government Area, experienced similar situation as names with alphabets `K to O’ were also missing from the voters’ register.

Nwoye said he was disappointed that his name was missing in the same unit where he voted in 2011.

“I am disappointed at the turn of events here. I was here as early as 8 a.m. to be accredited with my father and uncle, but found out that our names were missing in the INEC register,” he said.

Security was beefed in all parts of the state. A combined team of the police, State Security Service, SSS, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, mounted surveillance on ground and in the air to ensure that the election was hitch free.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nasir El-Rufai, was prevented from moving out of his hotel room in Finotel Hotel to monitor the election.

The director of the State Security Service, SSS in the state, A.U. Okeiyi, said the move was to protect him from potential harm.

“El-Rufai is not an ordinary person. If anything happens to him, they will blame the security,” he said.

However, El-Rufai, who was uncomfortable with the detention told the three heavily armed SSS officials guarding him that he did not need their unsolicited service to ensure his security.

“I asked them why they were following me; they told me that they were protecting me because Awka is not safe. I told them that I came with my own security,” the former minister said.

Counting is in progress and results are being collated ahead of Sunday when they are expected to be announced.

The election was postponed in Obosi owing to the late arrival of sensitive materials. The election for this ward will now hold on Sunday, with accreditation scheduled to commence at 8:00am and voting at 12:00pm.

In his reaction to the conduct of the election, candidate of the Labour Party, Ifeanyi Ubah, said in his Otolo Nnewi Ward 1 that he had no reason to fault the election until the results were released.

Ngige said the voters’ register given to the parties by INEC before the election is not the same used in the election proper as some names were missing, adding that in areas considered to be his stronghold, voting materials were brought without result sheets.

He also said that in his ward in Alor community and other communities in Idemili North and Idemili South, accreditation was delayed to disenfranchise the People.

There are already indications that the result of the election might be contentious as the Apc has said that it will not accept the results if voting does not take place in all local governments, especially in the party’s strongholds of Idemili North and South as well as Akwa South.

The party, in a statement issued by its interim national publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed, alleged that logistic problems were deliberately contrived by INEC to deny thousands the opportunity to vote and demanded the immediate removal of the resident electoral commission.

The APC also expressed dismay that “materials meant for Idemili North Local Government, which has 180,000 voters, have been hijacked, without saying who hijacked the ballot papers and why, and without explaining why the materials meant for APGA and PDP strongholds were not hijacked.”

Justice Mukhtar said the judiciary plays a critical role in mediating conflicts and upholding human rights through a robust interpretation of the law.

Presidency, Gov Lamido In Battle Over Corruption Allegation

0

The Presidency on Friday challenged governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa state to name the minister involved in the purported $250 million bribery allegation with evidence or be prepared to tender apologies to the president and Nigerians.

President Goodluck Jonathan refuted claims by Lamido that he ignored information that an unnamed minister collected $250 million bribe from an oil company.

Speaking through his special adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, the President said the allegation is “regrettable, grossly irresponsible, falsehood and mischievous”.

According to Abati, “The allegation and the claim by Lamido that he informed President Jonathan of the acceptance of the huge bribe by an unnamed minister is absolutely without any foundation in fact or reality.”

He said no such communication has ever taken place between the two, saying the statement credited to the governor is a deliberate attempt to cast aspersions on the seriousness of the administration’s efforts to curb corruption.

“The Presidency views the patently bogus allegation reportedly made by the governor in a radio interview yesterday as an unacceptable and callous attempt to unjustly impinge the integrity of the President,” Abati stated.

“We abhor Gov Lamido’s descent to the unscrupulous, reckless and thoughtless peddling of arrant falsehood in a puerile effort to score cheap political points against President Jonathan for personal and sectional political gains,” he said further.

He assured that the administration would continue to make corrupt public officials answerable for their actions and will not succumb to harassment and blackmail by “self-seeking politicians jostling for personal advantage”.

Anambra Election: APC Condemns Arrest Of 120 Election Observers

0

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has condemned the arrest of 120 election observers on Thursday at Disyne Hotel located at Owerri, Imo State, by the police, alleging that a script was being played out to rig Saturday’s governorship polls in Anambra State.

The heavily armed police officers were said to be acting on the instructions of Mohammed Katsina, commissioner of Police, Imo State.

It was gathered that the 120 arrested persons were in the hotel to undergo training conducted by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of Saturday’s gubernatorial election holding in Anambra State.

According to a statement issued by Human Rights activist, Festus Keyamo, on behalf of the party, the entire accredited observers are currently in detention at the Imo State Police Command.

In a separate reaction, the APC has also accused the police of acting out the script of the PDP for Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra by arresting the election monitors, which it disclosed are from Osun State.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its interim national publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said that the tagging of the observers as “armed hoodlums carrying fake voters cards, official identity cards of INEC and independent Observer identity cards” is false.

“Those who were arrested by the increasingly partisan police are election monitors from Osun, who are members of the Justice and Equality Organization, an INEC-accredited election monitoring NGO,” the party observed.

It went further: ”Those whom the police have labelled as thugs are members of the Justice and Equality Organization. They are in Owerri for training ahead of the election. They chose Owerri because of its proximity to Anambra and its affordable hotel costs. None of them is a member of the APC, despite the insinuation by the police, and none is armed, because you don’t need guns to monitor elections. Any weapon exhibited by the police must have been procured by them to justify their gaffe.”

”The only offence that the arrested election monitors have committed, in the eyes of the police, is that they are from a staunchly APC state with zero tolerance for the do-nothing, bumbling PDP,” it concluded.

N10 Billion Fraud: Two Sons Of Gov Lamido Arrested

1

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested two sons of Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido, for their alleged involvement in a N10billion fraud.

Aminu and Mustapha were arrested Thursday in Kano and are currently facing interrogation at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja by a team of detectives.

The arrest of the governor’s sons, insiders say, is in continuation of investigations that commenced in December 2012 when Aminu was first arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano Airport, en route Cairo, Egypt for failing to declare the $50,000 in his possession.

Aminu who was prosecuted by the commission and convicted by a Federal High Court in Kano, has again been implicated in a web of money laundering in which billions of naira from Jigawa state government accounts are funnelled into the accounts of companies run by the Jigawa state governor and his two sons.

more than N10 billion is said to have been transferred from Jigawa State government accounts into the accounts in which Sule Lamido and his two sons have interest from 2007 till date.

The EFCC is said to have traced these transfers to 10 companies where Lamido and sons are directors and signatories to the account.

Some of the companies include Bamaina Alluminium Limited, Bamaina Holdings Limited, Bamaina Company Nigeria Limited, Rawda Integrated Services Limited, Speeds International Limited and Saby Integrated Nigeria Limited.

The account of these companies received huge cash inflow between 2007 and 2013, a period that coincide with the tenure of Sule Lamido as governor of Jigawa state.

For instance in Bamaina Aluminium where Sule Lamido and his two sons are directors, investigations revealed that the company’s account controlled by Mustapha as signatory received total credit of N1.52billion between January 2010 and August 2013.

It recorded a total debit of the same amount, with Mustapha and other companies in which Lamido and his sons are directors being the beneficiaries.

In the same vein, Bamaina Holdings Limited’s account with the governor as sole signatory received a total of N1.19 billion between February 2007 and July 2013.

About N1billion was paid from this account into accounts of companies controlled by the governor and his sons.

Massive lodgements were also discovered in the account of Bamaina Company Nigeria limited controlled by Mustapha as sole signatory from Bamaina Alluminium. Between January 2010 and July 2013, the account received over N500million.

From the account of Rawda Integrated Services Limited controlled by Mustapha, there have also been massive movement of funds to another company run by Sule Lamido, Speeds International Limited. Speeds’ account recorded a turnover ofN2.2billion between January 2007 and February 2010.

In the account of Rawda with a new generation bank investigators discovered the movement of N2.6billion to an unknown signatory.

That account recorded over one hundred withdrawals running to over N600milion in cash between November 2007 and April 2008.

Saby Integrated Services Nigeria Limited, another company owned by Lamido received over N730million from several Jigawa State government agencies between June 2010 and August 2010.

Permanent Secretaries To Face SSS, ICPC Screening

0

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Aji, says henceforth persons seeking to be appointed permanent secretaries in the federal civil service will be subjected to integrity tests.

Speaking at the 2013 Civil Service Week in Abuja, Aji said that the test would be undertaken through the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and the State Security Service, SSS.

He said other relevant security outfits in the country would also be involved before a presentation would be made to the president for appointments.

Aji said the scrutiny would follow after they had been successfully voted by the directors in their respective ministries, where vacancies for the permanent secretaries existed.

He also said that such persons must be able to score 100 per cent during the selection process to be able to proceed to the next stage of the screening and that the new policy would maintain decorum and integrity of the service.

Aji decried a growing impression that the civil service had lost its values and called for a collective effort to salvage the service.

“As we are aware, there is a general impression that the civil service of today has lost its values and integrity and has deteriorated in terms of moral, discipline and productivity. The ciivil service had hitherto been known for its patriotism, discipline, loyalty, stability, impartiality, competency, innovation, productivity and honesty,” he noted.

He also said that corruption in the service must be tackled head on, adding that his office was strengthening the Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit in the ministries, departments and agencies of government to bring about the needed changes.
