The governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, assessed the performance of the on Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 16 years that it held power in the country and declared that it lacks the moral right to govern Nigeria again.
Posting a verdict of failure on the PDP, the governor stated that the party plundered the nation’s economy and the distorted its social structure.
Speaking at the flag off of the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign rally for forthcoming local government election in the state held in Lapai, Lapai Local government area, Bello said that the PDP, which ruled Nigeria at the centre from 1999 to 2015, exhibited low moral values which manifested in the recklessness and impunity that characterised its management of the country.
The height of the party’s recklessness and “heartlessness”, the governor stated, was when it allowed its members to embezzle funds meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition to fight Boko Haram insurgents.
“One cannot comprehend how they (PDP) felt comfortable on such kind of money when our soldiers were dying fighting insurgents in the North east,” governor Bello said.
He noted that the same trend of financial recklessness was exhibited by the PDP in Niger State as the resources it got in the 16 years of its rule did not translate into development.
“It is sad that a lot of monies sent to the state were mismanaged by the last administration,” the governor lamented.
Apart from mismanaging state resources, Bello alleged that the last administration headed by Babangida Aliyu looted pension funds dedicated to the settlement of entitlements and emoluments of retired civil servants.
The governor stated that his administration was already taking steps to bring those who stole from the pension funds to justice and recover the stolen funds.
Welcoming over 6,000 decampees from PDP into the APC, the governor lauded them for dumping the opposition party to join hands with the new government to rebuild the state.
He disclosed that the last administration left an empty treasury, justifying his cautiousness not to make too many campaign promises, as he did not know the state of the government’s finances.
Bello he appealed to the people to vote for the APC at the grassroots to consolidate the gains of its emergence as the ruling party at federal and state levels.
Speaking earlier at the Palace of Etsu Lapai, Umar Bago III, the governor said his administration will continue and finish with some of the last administration’s people’s oriented projects.
“Your royal highness, we have decided to continue with some projects of the last administration and dropped the white Elephant projects such as the Minna City Centre,” the governor stated.
