The former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu, former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, and former Minister of state for Education, Nyesom Wike, were some of the big names that came out victorious in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primaries conducted in 29 states Monday.
In Adamawa State, Ribadu, who decamped to the PDP from the All Progressive Congress, APC, only a few months ago, beat six other aspirants, including the state governor, Bala Ngilari to emerge winner of the party’s ticket with 688 votes.
Ngilari got only 26 votes.
Wike won the Rivers State governorship primaries with a landslide, scoring 1,083 votes out of a total of 1,108 delegates’ votes.
While Wike described his conquest as victory for democracy, 17 out of the 24 aspirants boycotted the election which they described as a sham, insisting that due process was not followed.
The aggrieved group said they had presented their complaints to the national leadership of the party and are awaiting its response.
Similarly, former Secretary to Akwa Ibom state government and executive director of Zenith Bank, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, emerged winner of the PDP primaries in Akwa Ibom state, with 1, 201 votes.
Emmanuel was the favoured candidate of Governor Godswill Akpabio.
In Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje defeated the former minister of state for defence, Musiliu Obanikoro with 432 votes against 343.
Obanikoro, has, however, rejected the results, describing the election as a “complete sham” and alleging “electoral fraud”. He said that if the result of the primary is allowed to stand it would affect the party in the general election.
In Imo State, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, was elected as the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the 2015 general Elections.
Ihedioha polled a total of 346votes to beat his closest rival, Ifeanyi Ararume, a former senator who scored 336 votes, while former governor Ikedi Ohakim had 213 votes.
Also, former Senate Leader Folarin, emerged as the gubernatorial candidate of the party in Oyo State having polled 167 votes out of the total 198 valid votes cast to beat other contestants.
Shortly before the primaries, former governor Alao Akala withdrew from the race and announced his defection to the Labour Party.
Similarly, chairman, Senate committee on Health, Ifeanyi Okowa, emerged PDP governorship candidate for Delta State with 406 votes.
