A doctor from Sierra Leone, Martin Salia, who was flown to the United States for treatment after contracting the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, has died.
The death of the Ebola patient was announced in a statement by the management of the Nebraska MedicalCentre on Monday.
“We are extremely sorry to announce that the third patient we have cared for with the Ebola virus, Martin Salia, has passed away as a result of the advanced symptoms of the disease,” the statement said.
Salia, who is a Sierra Leoneanresidentinthe US , contracted the deadly hemorrhagic fever while treating patients in his home country and was airlifted to Nebraska for treatment on Saturday.
The hospital on Sunday night said that Salia’s health condition deteriorated and that doctors were putting in efforts to save him.
Salia became the 10th person with the virus to be treated in the US, and the second to have died from the disease.
It will be recalled that in October, a Liberian citizen, Thomas Duncan, died at a Texas hospital after contracting the virus in the West African country.
The virus which has killed thousands of people in West Africa.
