Another building collapses in Lagos

A FIVE-storey building under construction collapsed at Ladipo Oluwole Street in the GRA area of Apapa, Lagos State, on Sunday, April 23.

The incident was blamed on a thunderstrike.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has reportedly sealed the building following the incident.

A volunteer with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Asimiyu Tiamiyu, who was at the scene of the incident, said no casualties were recorded.

He also disclosed that there were no workers present at the scene when the building collapsed.

However, Tiamiyu expressed concern over the recurring cases of building collapse in Lagos and urged the state government to address the issue as a matter of urgency.

The incident is coming barely 10 days after a seven-storey building collapsed in the Banana Island area of the state.

The exclusive neighbourhood, home to some of the wealthiest Nigerians, witnessed the collapse of a building under construction on April 12.

Although, the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development had initially claimed no casualties were recorded during the incident, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed that one body was recovered from the rubble of the collapsed building.

He added that not less than 25 people were also rescued from the incident.

The Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had, while inspecting the site of the collapsed building on Saturday, April 22, ordered the demolition of several buildings in the area.

Lagos State has had at least 115 incidents of building collapse in the last decade.

In some cases, there were no fatalities, while in others, scores of people perished in the rubble.

In November 2021, the collapse of a 21-story building at Gerard Road, Ikoyi, led to the death of about 45 people.

Additionally, the collapse of a building at the Lekki Gardens in Ikoyi in 2016 claimed the lives of about 35 people.
