Obasa Emerges As Speaker, Lagos Assembly

Lagos St

The lawmaker representing Agege Constituency 1, Mudashiru Obasa, has emerged as the Speaker of the 8th Lagos State Assembly.

Obasa is serving his fourth term as legislator in the hallowed chambers.

He was nominated by Olanrewaju Oshun of Mainland Constituency 2, while his nomination was seconded by Sola Giwa of Lagos Island Constituency 2.

The new Speaker, who is believed to be a loyal supporter of a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, was elected unopposed.

Earlier in the day, leading women organizations in Lagos State had rooted for Funmilayo Tejuosho, a female member- elect, as Speaker.

Tejuosho is a former deputy speaker and also a four-time member of the House.

The groups, including Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center, WARDC, Gender Dialogue Platform, Women Empowerment Unit of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Women Consortium of Nigeria, WOCON and Women Law and Development Center, WLDCN, had signed a joint statement saying that the time was ripe for the state to show that it is progressive and women-friendly by ensuring the emergence of Tejuosho as Speaker of the House.
