A NIGERIAN, Onyinyechi Mark has won Nigeria’s first gold medal in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category at the 2024 paralympics currently ongoing in Paris.
Mark made history, setting a new world record with a weight lift of 147kg to win the gold on Friday, September, 6.
She surpassed the previous record which was also held by a Nigerian, Lucy Ejike with her iconic performance this year.
Her performance has all but guaranteed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the paralympic Games with one lift remaining.
Unlike the 2024 Olympics where Team Nigeria had a poor performance, the team has secured three medals so far at the Paralympics.
Earlier this week in the competition, Esther Nworgu had secured Nigeria’s second medal, winning silver in the women’s up to 41kg Para-Powerlifting event.
With two lifts of 112 kg and 118 kg, respectively, she broke two Paralympic records, but Zhe Cui of China topped her in the gold medal.
Meanwhile, the first paralympic medal for Nigeria this year was won by Eniola Bolaji, who made history becoming the first African to win a medal in badminton at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.
She defeated her opponent, Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna, in straight sets 2-0 (21-9, 21-9) to win a bronze medal.
The Nigeria’s Team has consistently made history in Paralympic powerlifting and athletics.
