Labour Party wins Eti-Osa Reps seat as Banky W, others lose out

THE Labour Party (LP) candidate for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, Thaddeus Attah, has been declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The result was announced by the INEC Returning Officer Funmilayo Odukoya at the Collation Centre, Lagos State Model Nursery and Primary School in Lekki 1 on Sunday, February 26.

Attah won with 24,075 votes. Bankole Wellington (Banky W) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed with a total of 18,666 and Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got 16,901 votes.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the APC and PDP party agents had contested the validity of the results, arguing that some units did not transmit the figures through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

The PDP agent Aderemi Adeshina also said voters were disenfranchised in some polling units.

“We will not accept the result until another election takes place in all the wards where we were disenfranchised, “ he said.

Banky W is losing the elections for the second time since he announced his decision to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in 2018.

He contested the House of Representatives seat under the Modern Democratic Party (MDP) in 2019, but lost to Ibrahim Obanikoro of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senate President Ahmed Lawan reelected

SENATE President Ahmed Lawan has been declared winner of the Yobe North Senatorial District by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The result was announced by the returning officer Yobe North Professor Omolola Aduloje from the Federal University Gashua, Bade Local Government.

According to the returning officer, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 91,318 votes to defeat Ilu Alhaji-Bello of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 22,849 votes.

She therefore declared Lawan as winner of Yobe North Senatorial Election.

Questions were raised after Lawan, who did not participate in the Yobe North senatorial primary, was nominated for the seat by the APC after he lost the presidential ticket.

He emerged the APC senatorial candidate through a Supreme Court ruling, after a running battle with Bashir Machina, who won the party’s primary election.

Lecturer arrested with 17 BVAS machines in Cross River

SECURITY operatives in Cross Rivers State have arrested a lecturer in the Philosophy Department of the University of Calabar, Gabriel Agabi, for being in possession of 17 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines.

According to the News Agency Of Nigeria (NAN), Agabi, who was arrested on Sunday, February 26, was also accused of impersonating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation officer for the Yache ward in Yala Local Government Area of the state Dominic Abakedi.

Agabi was wearing a reflective jacket of INEC when he was arrested.

He was reportedly picked up at the collation centre in Okpoma, with BVAS machines not programmed for the ward where he was arrested.

Reports say Agabi was later taken to the Ogoja INEC office, where he confessed to having impersonated Abakedi and was later taken away by the police to the Ogoja Area Command for further investigation by the CID unit.

According to NAN, the Commissioner of Police in charge of elections in the region, Zannah Shettima, refused to comment on the matter.

Cross River State governor loses Senate bid

CROSS River State governor, Ben Ayade, has lost his bid to return to the Senate following his defeat by the incumbent senator representing Cross River North, Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe.

Agom-Jarigbe won the National Assembly election held on Saturday with 76,145 votes. Ayade got 56,595 votes.

The Returning Officer, Emmanuel Emanghe, announced the results on Monday, February 27.

Agom-Jarigbe, a two-time member of the House of Representatives, was elected into the Senate through a bye-election in September 2021 following the death of the former senator Rose Okoh.

Ayade, who served in the Senate between 2011 and 2015, sought to replace Agom-Jarigbe as the Senator representing Cross River North.

However, there was an issue with the declaration form, which prevented Agom-Jarigbe from being officially declared as the winner. Upon demand for the declaration form, he was told that it was mistakenly taken to Obudu by the electoral body in the state.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Gabriel Yomere, confirmed that the form was mistakenly taken to Obudu but that Agom-Jarigbe could be issued a temporary declaration form pending the arrival of the original one.

In the Ogoji/Yala Federal Constituency election, Godwin Offiono of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated the incumbent lawmaker representing the area, Jude Ngaji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), by scoring 36,651 votes. Wakasor Ofem announced the result.

The PDP retained its hold on Cross River State, which has historically been a stronghold for the party.

2023 Election: Govs Ayade, Ugwuanyi lose senatorial bids

THE Cross River and Enugu states’ governors have lost their senatorial bids following the National Assembly elections held on Saturday, February 25.

Governor Ben Ayade of the Cross River State lost his senatorial ambition to the incumbent senator representing the Cross River North, Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 76,145 votes.

Ayade, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, came second with 56,595 votes.

Ayade was in the Senate between 2011 and 2015.

The result of the poll was announced at about 3:05am on Monday, February 27, by the returning officer Emmanuel Emanghe.

Agom-Jarigbe, a two-time member of the House of Representatives, was elected into the Senate through a by-election in September 2021 following the death of Rose Okoh.

However, he could not be issued the declaration form by the returning officer, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the certificate was mistakenly taken to Obudu.

Speaking on the telephone with NAN, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Gabriel Yomere, said, “The form was mistakenly taken to Obudu but he can be issued with a temporary one pending when the original one will be brought.”

Similarly, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State lost his senatorial bid to the Labour Party (LP) candidate for the district, Okechukwu Ezea.

The Returning Officer for the election, Chukwuemeka Ubaka, announced the result at the collation centre of the INEC in Nsukka Local Government Area headquarters on Monday at about 5:20am.

The LP candidate Okechukwu Ezea polled a total of 104,492 votes to defeat Ugwuanyi of the PDP, who secured a total 46,948 votes.

The All Progressives Congress candidate for the district, Ejike Eze, garnered 6,816 votes.

Tinubu wins in Ogun, Ondo

THE All Progressives Congress’ Bola Tinubu has been declared winner of the presidential election in Ogun and Ondo states after results from the two states were sorted.

In Ogun State, Tinubu secured a total of 341,554 votes across the 20 local government areas in the state to edge the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, who garnered a total of 123,831 votes.

Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), finished third  with a total of 85,829.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, scored 2,200 votes.

Similarly, the APC polled a total of 369,924 votes to emerge winner in Ondo State. Tinubu won the poll with a landslide difference of 254,461 votes. 

Abubakar was the first runner-up with a total of 115,463 votes.

Obi got a total tally of 47,350 votes, while Kwakwaso secured a total of 930 votes.

Despite winning less LGAs, Atiku defeats Tinubu in Buhari’s state, Katsina

THE presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has defeated his main rival Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Katsina State.

Abubakar secured a total of 489,045, while Tinubu polled 482,283 votes.

The PDP candidate won with a slight margin of 6,762 in the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, a member of the APC. 

Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) who came third got 69,386 votes of the total valid votes.

Abubakar was declared winner of the poll by the Returning Officer of the state, Professor Mua’zu Abubakar Gusau, at the INEC Presidential Election Collation Centre in Katsina.

Although Tinubu won in 21 local government areas (LGAs), Atiku, who won in 13 areas, went ahead to defeat the APC candidate. The state has 34 local government areas.

Abubakar won in the following LGAs: Batsari, Mashi, Kurfi, Batagarawa, Dutsinma, Kusada, Mani, Kankia, Kankara, Bakori, Jibia, Katsina and Safana.

He also secured significant votes in the other LGAs where Tinubu led.

The total number of accredited voters was 1,097,663 out of the 3,516,719 registered voters recorded in the state.

The INEC Returning Officer in the state, disclosed that elections were cancelled in some polling units across the LGAs due to thuggery, insecurity, resistance, violence and over-voting and obstruction.

Three arrested for allegedly razing collation centre in Kano

THE Kano State Police Command on Sunday, February 26 confirmed the arrest of three suspects, who allegedly razed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices in the Takai Local Government Area of the state where the presidential and National Assembly elections results were being collated.

The ICIR gathered that the armed thugs attacked the INEC office early Sunday.

The attack took place as INEC officials were waiting for the arrival of results from the last two wards (Takai and Kachako) of the LGA.

The police spokesman in the state, Superintendent Abdullahi Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect allegedly set ablaze the generator room and destroyed some INEC property before they were arrested.

Also confirming the incident, the Kano South senatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Kawu Sumaila, said at an emergency conference that, at least, one person was killed and another injured during the attack.

Sumaila further alleged that there was another attack being planned against the Rano office of INEC by some hoodlums.

Gbajabiamila elected for sixth time into House of Reps

FEMI Gbajabiamila has won re-election for the sixth time to represent the Surulere 2, Lagos, Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The results were declared at INEC’s collation centre in Surulere on Sunday evening.

The House of Representatives won 19,717 votes, while his closest opponent, Jeje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), came second with 5,121 votes.

Mathew Idowu of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) had 838 votes, Benedicta Uba of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) had 660 votes, Ademola Oshinaya of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) had 623 votes, and Lumumba Savage of Party A had 337 votes.

The INEC returning officer, Virgy Ebere Chukwu Onyene, announced that Gbajabiamila, of the All Progressives Congress, had satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, thereby declaring him the winner of the election.

This marks his sixth consecutive election victory since he was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003 to represent the Surulere II Federal Constituency.

WikkiTimes publisher arrested allegedly on Bauchi Governor’s order

PUBLISHER of WikkiTimes, a Bauchi-based investigative platform, Haruna Salihu Mohammed, has been arrested allegedly on the order of the Bauchi State governor Bala Mohammed.

Haruna is reportedly being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Bauchi police headquarters.

A statement released on Sunday, February 26, and signed by the editor of WikkiTimes, Yakubu Mohammed, said the publisher was arrested earlier on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Duguri, the governor’s hometown, while covering the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“Before the arrest, Haruna was interviewing some women who were protesting that they submitted CVs but were not employed.

“During the course of the interview, the women started protesting that they would not vote.

“Soon, some hoodlums believed to be supporters of the governor attempted to lynch him before the police whisked him away,” Yakubu stated.

He said the police had explained that Haruna was taken away for his safety.

He said Haruna had spent more than 24 hours in detention.

“He was accused of sending the video of the women to the opposition APC. However, the video was shared with me, and the police had examined my phone as well after taking my statement,” Yakubu added.

Efforts made to reach the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Mohammed Wakil were unsuccessful as he did not pick his call nor respond to text messages sent to his mobile phone.
