THE Police Command in Jigawa State has warned against extortion and human rights violation by officers while enforcing the ban on spy plate numbers.
Commissioner of Police in the State Aliyu Tafida gave the warning in a statement released on Tuesday.
He urged officers to enforce the order in a professional manner and called on residents in possession of such plate numbers to submit them to the nearest police station.
“The Commissioner of Police Jigawa State Police Command, CP Aliyu Sale Tafida psc, has directed Area Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of the Command to effectively and professionally ensure that all Police SPY Plates Number currently in use in the State whether authorized or unauthorized are confiscated with immediate effect, as all authorisations are hereby revoked indefinitely.
“He also directed that the law abiding citizens who are in possession of such number plates should submit same to the Police State Headquarters Dutse, or nearest Police Stations,” the statement said.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba had announced the ban on spy plate numbers nationwide last week.
In a statement, Baba said the ban was to avert disregard for traffic rules and regulations. He also noted that that officers were not expected to arrest vehicle owners in the process.
Police commands across the country have commenced a clampdown on vehicles with spy plate numbers.
