SSS releases NLC president, seizes his passport

OPERATIVES of the State Security Service (SSS) has released the Nigeria Labour Congress’ (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero hours after he was arrested on Thursday, September 9.

Ajaero was released on bail late in the night of Monday, September 9, but his passport was seized.

This came after the NLC demanded his unconditional release before midnight.

The demand was contained in the  communiqué issued by the National Administrative Council ((NAC) of the union at the end of an emergency meeting in Abuja, on Monday.

“The NLC demands the immediate and unconditional release of comrade Joe Ajaero before 12 midnight today,” the communiqué reads.

“The council unequivocally condemns the brazen and illegal detention of comrade Joe Ajaero by the Nigerian State without any legal warrant or justification.”




     

     

    The ICIR reports that Ajaero was arrested on Monday by operatives of the State Security Services (DSS) while on his way to the United Kingdom (UK), where he was invited to a conference by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain.

    Confirming his release, his lawyer, Abubakar Marshall, told newsmen that the labour leader was released to him, adding that the secret police tasked him with presenting him for further interrogation whenever the need arose.

    The ICIR reported that the labour congress on Monday, confirmed the arrest of Ajaero, by operatives of the State Security Services (SSS).

    The arrest followed allegations of terrorism financing, subversion, and treasonable felony, which had led to rising tensions between the Nigerian government and the NLC.

    The ICIR also reported that shortly after the arrest of the labour leader, SSS raided the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Abuja, in continuation of is viewed as President Bola Tinubu-led government’s clampdown on the media and dissecting voices in Nigeria.
    The attacks and harassment of journalists and other citizens by security operatives especially the police using the NPF-NCCC have remained a great concern in Nigeria.
